New speed limits set to improve road safety across West Berkshire communities
Council acts on residents' feedback to introduce safer speed limits across Donnington, Shaw, Greenham and Sulhamstead
West Berkshire Council will be introducing new speed limits in four parts of the district after residents, town and parish councils, and ward members raised concerns about speeding and road safety.
Following statutory consultations earlier this year, the changes are being brought forward by the Council, in partnership with local town and parish councils, due to concerns raised by residents about speeding and safety near homes, schools, and areas with high pedestrian activity. Thames Valley Police also contributed through the formal review process.
The decision follows feedback from more than 500 responses across all four consultations, with support for reduced speed limits outweighing the objections. New, lower speed limits will be introduced at the following locations:
- Oxford Road, Donnington - reduced from 40mph to 30mph
- B4009 Long Lane, Shaw - extension of the 30mph limit by 80 metres
- A339 Newtown Road, Greenham - reduced from 50mph to 40mph, and 30mph on the roundabout
- Sulhamstead Hill, Sulhamstead - reduced from national speed limit to 30mph
To further support driver compliance, the Council will also install clearer signage, improved hazard warnings, and update vehicle-activated speed reminder signs.
Cllr Stuart Gourley, Executive Member for Environment and Highways at West Berkshire Council, said:
"Residents have been very clear about where they feel improvements are needed, and we have listened. These changes reflect our commitment to creating thriving communities with support from strong local voices.
"Working closely with town and parish councils and communities, we've acted on the concerns raised and identified practical steps to make these roads safer for everyone. These speed limit reductions will help protect pedestrians, support safer school routes and improve confidence for those walking and cycling."
The new limits will be implemented as part of the Council's current Network Management Works Programme, beginning shortly after formal approval, and will be funded through the existing capital budget for speed limit changes.
