Yesterday, Wednesday 7 August, Cllr Jeff Brooks, Leader of West Berkshire Council, signed the Armed Forces Covenant at Shaw House.

He signed the Covenant alongside Lt Col Tim Hebberd, PWRR, Denison Barracks to show West Berkshire Councils continued support for the military community.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the community.

By signing the covenant, we are committed to uphold the Armed Forces Covenant and support the Armed Forces Community. We recognise the contribution that Service personnel, both regular and reservist, veterans and military families make to our organisation, our community and to the country.

The Covenant focuses on helping members of the Armed Forces community have the same access to services without being disadvantaged by their military service. This support is provided in several areas including housing and education.

Councillor Jeff Brooks, Leader of West Berkshire Council, said:

"By signing this covenant, we affirm our promise to uphold the values of fairness, equality, and care for our armed forces personnel. This commitment ensures that they and their families receive the support and respect they deserve, reinforcing our community's dedication to those who have bravely served our nation."

West Berkshire has a strong Armed Forces history with many organisations having bases within our district. This means that we also have many personnel working and living here as well as over 4000 Ex Regular or Reservists living in the area. By signing the Covenant, we are ensuring that those who have served and their families are treated with fairness and respect.

You can find more information on how we support our Armed Forces here.

Listen to Cllr Steevenson, Armed Forces Champion, talk about the importance of signing this for the community.
