Don't let rogue waste spoil our countryside

26 - Rogue Waste

How to protect yourself, and West Berkshire, from fly-tipping

26 - Rogue Waste

We all want to keep West Berkshire looking beautiful. Unfortunately, it only takes one dumped bin bag, or a whole truckload of rubbish, to spoil our countryside and leave taxpayers footing the clean-up bill.

We can all play our part in preventing fly-tipping by following the SCRAP code whenever someone offers to take rubbish away for you:

  • Suspect- be cautious of anyone who turns up unexpectedly or offers a deal that seems 'too good to be true
  • Check- make sure they're a licensed waste carrier. You can look them up on the Environment Agency website or call 03708 506 506
  • Refuse- walk away if they can't show proof of registration
  • Ask- find out where your waste will go and how it will be disposed of
  • Paperwork- always get a waste transfer note or receipt, including their licence number and vehicle registration. Reputable businesses will be happy to provide this, and if they can't, it's a red flag

It's also worth knowing that if your waste is later found fly-tipped by a rogue trader, and you haven't completed these checks, you could be held responsible and fined £600.

A quick check now can save a lot of trouble later.
