Soil conditioner give‑away

We will be holding our eighth soil conditioner give‑away on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March from 10am to 4pm. Residents can collect free, peat‑free, PAS 100 certified soil conditioner produced locally from West Berkshire's garden waste.

The event will take place at:

Padworth Integrated Waste Management Facility
Padworth Lane, RG7 4JF

Attendance and proof of address

No appointment is required to attend the give‑away event.

Residents must bring proof of address, such as an ID card or recent utility bill, to confirm they live in West Berkshire.

Containers and loading

The soil conditioner is provided loose, so please bring your own bags, boxes or containers, as we cannot supply these. Vehicles must be parked in the allotted parking area and bags or containers must be filled from within the RORO containers.

For health and safety reasons, soil conditioner cannot be loaded directly into vehicles by staff or machinery. Residents are responsible for loading the material themselves and should take appropriate precautions.

This is always a popular event so please expect queues during busy periods and short delays while containers are refilled. Our busiest times are usually between 10am and 11am, and again between 1pm and 2pm. The soil conditioner is normally topped up around midday and again at 2pm.

Residents wishing to use the household waste recycling centre during their visit must still book an appointment in advance.

Queuing and material availability

This is a free event and queues may occur at peak times. Supplies will be restocked throughout the day, so there is no need to arrive early. Vehicles must not obstruct access to the site prior to the start of the event.

Vehicles will not be admitted after 4pm. Please allow sufficient time for loading.

To help ensure fair access for all residents, we ask visitors to take a reasonable amount of soil conditioner. Veolia will manage this on the day.

Vehicle restrictions

Standard HWRC vehicle restrictions apply. Vehicles listed as prohibited in the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) user guide (see page 8) will not be permitted. No commercial vehicles are allowed; this event is for householders only.

Liability

Residents are responsible for loading their own vehicles. Event organisers accept no liability for any injury or damage that may occur during the collection or loading of soil conditioner.

Benefits of composting at home

Home composting is a simple, cost-effective way to turn your garden and kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost for your plants. By composting at home, you reduce the amount of waste sent for disposal and create a natural soil improver that helps your garden thrive. Most garden waste, fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, and even shredded paper can go into a compost bin. Avoid cooked food, meat, and dairy, as these can attract pests. These can all go in your food caddy which we collect every week free of charge.

With the right mix of "greens" (like grass cuttings and food scraps) and "browns" (like twigs and cardboard), you'll have healthy compost ready in a few months and it's completely free!

1. Reduce waste and save money

  • composting diverts food and garden waste from your black bin saving vital space for non-recyclable items
  • it's a free alternative to paid garden waste services, turning your waste into a valuable resource

2. Create free fertiliser

  • compost is rich in nutrients and improves soil structure, moisture retention, and plant health
  • use it in your garden beds, pots, or as mulch - no need to buy chemical fertilisers

3. Help the environment

  • it supports biodiversity by improving soil health and feeding beneficial organisms

4. Easy to start

  • you can compost using a bin, a pile, or even trench composting directly in your garden
  • West Berkshire residents can buy compost bins from the Get Composting website

Recycle Now provide great tips and useful advice to get your compost bin started.
