Advice for new refugees: what you can do whilst waiting for your decision

If you are waiting for the government to make a decision on your asylum application, you can:

• register at a doctors surgery (GP) and make an appointment to discuss any physical or mental health needs
• open a bank account
• start to improve your English language
• volunteer
• write a CV (you can also get support from West Berkshire Action for Refugees)
• read through the advice on these pages so you are prepared

If you have received your Leave to Remain, you can:

• open a bank account
• claim benefits
• look for housing
• look for a job
• enrol on an English Language course or improve other skills
