NHS health checks

If you're aged 40 to 74, you may be eligible for a free NHS health check. It's designed to spot early signs of health problems like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease before they become serious.

Why have a health check

A health check can:

  • help you understand your risk of developing certain conditions
  • help you get practical advice on how to stay healthy
  • prevent serious illness through early action

What happens during the check

The health check is a simple appointment with a healthcare professional. They will check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight. You will also have a short discussion about your lifestyle and how to reduce risks.

Who can get a health check

Health checks are available to:

  • adults aged 40 to 74 who do not already have certain health conditions
  • adults aged 40 to 74 who have not had an NHS Health Check in the last 5 years

If you think you are eligible but have not been invited, contact your GP surgery or our Public Health team to find out where you can get an NHS Health Check in your area.
