What is adult social care

A definition of who adult social care typically support.

Adult social care helps people aged 18 and over who have care and support needs because of a variety of conditions, as well as the carers who look after them. 

Recipients of adult social care are typically:

  • older people who require extra assistance to live independently
  • individuals living with physical disabilities
  • people with learning disabilities or autism
  • adults with physical illnesses or long-term health conditions
  • people with mental health conditions that affect their daily life
  • those who are recovering from a hospital stay and need short-term assistance to regain independence (reablement)
  • unpaid family and friends who are carers for an adult, by providing support for their own wellbeing and helping them take a break from caring
