When to refer to EBSA Advisory service
When should schools refer to the EBSA Advisory Team?
Contact the EBSA Advisory Team for advice if you are unsure whether a referral is necessary, or for general advice.
Early intervention can prevent the difficulty becoming more entrenched.
Refer to the EBSA Advisory Team if:
- you believe that the pupil is experiencing EBSA and have decided on the EBSA level
- you have an understanding of the possible reasons for non-attendance
- you have regular contact with the family
- you have read previous EBSA advice and put appropriate support in place for the pupil
- you would like additional advice/guidance on how to support the pupil
The EBSA triage panel members will be looking at what you as a school have already tried and put in place and would hope to see an
before you refer to the triage panel. It is important to evidence everything that you are trying.Support criteria
- Is the pupil experiencing worries/anxiety and having difficulty attending school, due to emotional reasons. Is there enough information to decide whether the non-attendance is due to EBSA and the underlying reasons for it?
- Is the pupil experiencing difficulties at EBSA levels 2-4? Schools are expected to address EBSA level 1 difficulties for all pupils.
- Are other teams already supporting the young person that would make working with the EBSA Advisory Team inappropriate?
- Have all parties completed the referral forms and agreed to work together to support the young person in school/back into school/to re-engage in education?
